Covid-19 Latest Update

Hysterosonography

Hysterosonography, also known as sonohysterography or saline infusion sonography (and not to be confused with hysterosalpingography), is a sophisticated medical imaging technique designed to closely examine the uterine cavity and evaluate the fallopian tubes. This minimally invasive procedure plays a crucial role in assessing the health of the uterine cavity, spotting any irregularities or conditions that could impact fertility or lead to gynecological issues, and evaluating the patency and health of the fallopian tubes.

Purpose:

– To identify abnormalities within the uterus, examine the uterine lining, and conduct fertility evaluations.

– To determine the openness (patency) of the Fallopian tubes, identify tubal abnormalities, assist in fertility assessments, and verify the success of tubal ligation procedures.

Advantages:

– Less invasive than certain alternatives, such as hysteroscopy, offering a gentler approach to uterine examination.

– Conveniently performed in an outpatient setting, eliminating the need for general anesthesia and allowing patients to return home the same day.

– Offers immediate, real-time imaging for on-the-spot assessments, delivering essential insights into the condition of the uterine cavity and fallopian tubes.

Limitations:

– Might not provide as comprehensive a view as hysteroscopy, which, although more invasive, offers a more detailed examination.

– Some patients may experience discomfort or cramping during the procedure.

– There’s a slight risk of infection following the procedure.

Preparation:

– The procedure is scheduled during the early follicular phase of the menstrual cycle (immediately after menstrual bleeding has stopped and until day 10-12) to ensure the endometrial lining is sufficiently thin for optimal imaging clarity.

– Patients might be advised to take an antibiotic dose before or after the procedure as a precautionary measure against infection.

– Taking an anti-inflammatory medication like Advil or ibuprofen before the procedure can help manage any discomfort.

Procedure Overview:

– Patients are recommended to have an empty bladder for the procedure.

– The patient will be positioned in a standard gynecological examination position.

– A speculum is gently inserted into the vagina to allow clear access to the cervix.

– The cervix is then cleaned with an antiseptic solution to minimize infection risk.

– A fine catheter introduces a sterile saline solution into the uterus, expanding the uterine cavity and enhancing the visibility of its lining.

– Finally, an ultrasound probe is used to capture detailed images, providing valuable insights into the uterine and fallopian tube health.
